This weekend brings the annual Pollença Wine Fair to the town, an event popular with locals and tourists alike.
Now in its 14th year and taking place in the Santa Domingo Cloister in Pollença, the fair is one of the largest on Mallorca and the best to be held in the north of the Island.
Doors are open from 10am to 8.30pm on Saturday 6th May and from 10am to 2pm on Sunday 7th May. The admission fee is 10 Euros, which includes a shopping voucher. Last entry is one hour before close on both days.
This year the fair welcomes 39 Mallorcan Wineries from across the Island including five new ones who have not exhibited at the fair before. The purpose of the fair is to bring together local wine producers, trade professionals and wine lovers who will relish the chance to sample some truly outstanding wines. The event has become extremely popular and attracts over 4,000 visitors annually. The reputation of Mallorcan wines has increased dramatically in recent times with many winning National and International awards.
Mallorca has two main Denominación de Origen designated wine regions, these being Binissalem set in the middle of the Island on the edge of the Serra de Tramuntana and Pla i Llevant, the traditional wine producing region on Mallorca, which covers the central and eastern areas. The second is in the foothills of the Serra de Tramuntana and these have a very distinguished flavour due to the acidity of the soil and can be very special. Denominación de Origen is the Spanish classification system for wines similar to that of the Appellation Contrôlée in France. Both of Mallorca’s D.O. regions contain more than a dozen wineries and there is a further group of over 20 wine makers under a regionally designated classification that permits the production of Mallorcan wines only from the region in which the grapes are grown. This regional classification covers the geographical area of 5 separate municipalities.
Set within the beautiful Serra de Tramuntana on the road between Lluc and Pollença the 16 hectares of Mortitx vineyards produce some 100,000 bottles of award winning wines annually and include red, rosé, white and sweet white.
Probably the oldest vine growing area is close to Pollença and Alcúdia where the Romans first established themselves on their arrival. This area contains the Can Vidalet bodega which produces a fine selection of wines from home produced imported grape varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Their white wines come from Moscatel (the Muscat grape), Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay grape varieties, which give what is described as a fresh and fruity taste and is an excellent accompaniment to local cuisine.
Whilst a number of differing grape varieties were imported on to the Island many fine local wines are made from grapes indigenous to Mallorca and a number of Bodegas specialise in this area.
Why not combine your visit to the Pollença Wine Fair with some boutique shopping and take the opportunity to try some of the local delicacies served in the many restaurants within the town.
